The very rare error plus a more correct stamp in one lot. East Africa and Uganda Protectorates.
(of Scott #62 & Stanley Gibbons #64) Mint NH. The "4 cents" Revaluation should be BELOW the Lined Squares in the Overprint and not above them. In 1919, the East Africa and Uganda Protectorates 1912-18 KGV 6 cent scarlet definitive stamp was revalued to 4 cents by being overprinted with "4 cents" and lined squares to obliterate the old 6c value.
Though it's more than 100 years since this overprint error was printed, neither Gibbons, Scott, nor any other catalogues, have identified this reversed overprint (with "4 cents" above the lined squares). Because of its rarity, this error missing from even the best British Africa and British Commonwealth collections.
Comparing the two stamps in our first scan, you can see the first stamp is a major error stamp with the "4 cents" revaluation printed well above the row of five line boxes. The second stamp is a more correct overprint with the lined boxes above the "4 cents" revaluation, but it is still is an minor error as the overprint is shifted downward so that the five line boxes do not actually overprint the old 6ยข denomination as does the normal overprint. The overprint boxes were intended to obliterate the old 6c value in the upper top corners of the underlying stamp so that the 4 cents revaluation would be clear. Both stamps pictured in the first scan are included in this listing. The major error stamp is mint never hinged. The minor error stamp is ever so lightly hinged. The first stamp is a major overprint error. It was caused by the misalignment of a sheet of the original stamps when the overprint was applied. We thoroughly searched to find another one out there, but could not even find an illustration of this major overprint on a stamp. The closest to it we could find was an offering by a European dealer two years ago of a margin stamp with this overprint error partially printed on the stamp and partially on the margin. That offering did not include the top part of the "4" of the "4 cents" overprint. Our stamp is mint never hinged and otherwise unknown with the entire overprint error printed within the stamp's borders. We have not priced this great error very high as it comes from an obscurely collected area (East Africa and Uganda Protectorates). However, even the most advanced British Commonwealth collector will recognize it as a significant prize that is missing from serious KGV collections.
